Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. In film, music and television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Her parents divorced in the year Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah, who was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. At the age of 8 when her mother gave her stage names Latifah which translates to gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah has always been large, at 5'10" and was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. in a school show, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah was a part of the original Flavor Unit group, which included several MCs as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
